Early Life and Education
Lu Gusun was born in 1940 and would go on to become one of the most eminent lexicographers in contemporary China. He embarked on his academic journey at Fudan University in 1957, where he would invest nearly six decades of his life building a distinguished career. Lu's passion for education and lexicography began during his student years, setting the foundation for his future contributions to the field.
Academic Career and Contributions
Lu Gusun’s career at Fudan University was marked by his dedication to both teaching and research. In 1970, he played a crucial role in compiling the New English Chinese Dictionary, an endeavor that catalyzed his reputation as a leading lexicographer. By 1986, Lu had been appointed as the chief editor of this dictionary, a significant work that became the first large-scale English-and-Chinese dictionary independently compiled by Chinese scholars. The dictionary, containing 15 million characters, was published by Shanghai Publishing House and received the National Book Award of China in 1993.
In addition to his lexicographical work, Lu was the founding director of the College of Foreign Languages and Literature at Fudan University. His teaching career spanned over 50 years, during which he nurtured countless students, many of whom became prominent in the field of foreign language studies. Lu’s commitment to education was profound, and he remained actively engaged in teaching until the final years of his life.
Shakespearean Studies
Apart from his lexicographical achievements, Lu Gusun was a prominent scholar in Shakespearean studies. He served as the vice-president of the Shakespeare Academy of China, where he furthered academic engagement with the works of Shakespeare. He received numerous awards throughout his lifetime, yet he regarded his role as a dedicated teacher as his most significant achievement. Lu’s legacy is celebrated through exhibitions and commemorations, such as the one held at the Liberal Arts Library of Fudan University, which showcased 49 of his works to honor his 80th birthday.
